Drew Forshey
Wrestled at St. Stephens High School from 1999 to 2003, winning four conference, region and state championships during that time…became just the third North Carolina high school wrestler to win four state championships…finished his prep wrestling career with a 202-2 record…named a three-time conference wrestler of the year and a Mat News North Carolina Wrestler of the Year with the Indians…was a USA Wrestling High School All-American honorable mention…also played soccer at St. Stephens…wrestled at UNC Chapel Hill, earning All-ACC Wrestler three times…finished one win away from being an NCAA Division I All-American as a sophomore with the Tar Heels…won an ACC Championship and qualified for the NCAA National Tournament.
Bruce Icard
Played JV and varsity football, basketball and baseball at Maiden High School from 1977-81….a part of the Blue Devils’ state football championship in 1978…named all-conference in baseball in 1979-80 and all-conference in both football and basketball from 1979-81…selected to the North Carolina Coaches’ Association East/West Football Game as a senior…went on to play football at Lenoir-Rhyne University….gained 229 yards versus Newberry in 1981 — the most ever at that time by an LR freshman and the ninth most in LR football history in a single game…finished his freshman year as the leading rusher at Lenoir-Rhyne with 651 yards on 112 carries…won the Hedrick Hero Award in 1983…during the 1984 season, Icard won Most Outstanding Player during the offseason and Most Outstanding Offensive Player in games against Newberry and Liberty…led Lenoir-Rhyne in rushing during his senior season and earned LR Offensive Player of the Year as well as All-District Team.
Audra Harrison
Played volleyball and basketball at Fred T. Foard High School…led Tigers to back-to-back 3A state volleyball championships in 2002-03 and 2003-04…named a two-time state MVP in volleyball…scored more than 1,000 points for the Tigers on the basketball court as a four-year starter from 2000-04…went on to play volleyballl at Gardner-Webb University, earning letterman four times…she was the first DI volleyball player to record 1,000 kills and 1,500 digs…earned the Jack Huss Award for Excellence in Officiating in 2002…served as a regional semifinal official in basketball in 2021-22…officiated the state volleyball semifinals in 2021 and also officiated in the NCAA….has worked with Athletes Lab as a performance coach from 2020 to the present.
Matt Isenhour
Played varsity football at Maiden High School from 2000-02, receiving Outstanding Lineman honors in 2000….led the Blue Devils to two Southern Foothills conference championships in 2001 and 2002…named to the All-Unifour football team in 2001 and 2002…named Southern Foothills 1A Player of the Year in 2002 as well as All-Piedmont Football first team and North Carolina All-State first team…signed to play college football at Appalachian State University….earned First Team All-Southern Conference honors in 2005 and 2006….a part of back-to-back NCAA Division I FCS National Championships with the Mountaineers in 2005 and 2006…won the Jacobs Blocking Award for the Best Blocker in the Southern Conference in 2005…inducted into the Appalachian State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.
Jim Woodruff
Coached multiple sports at Bunker Hill High School, including men’s basketball for 20 years, football for four years, JV basketball for four years and cross-country for two years…served as athletic director at Bunker Hill for six years and St. Stephens High School for four years…led the Bears to an SD-7 men’s basketball tournament championship in 1985-86…the Bears under Woodruff in 1987-88 won the SD-7 regular-season men’s basketball championship and finished in the state elite eight….Woodruff ed the Bears to SD-7 regular-season and tournament runner-up finishes in 1988-89…has served on several local athletic committees, including the Catawba Valley Classic (now Dick’s Sporting Goods Classic) tournament committee and the Catawba County Sports Hall of Fame committee…received the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Charlie Adams Distinguished Service Award in 2015.
Eddie Yount
A 1934 Newton-Conover High School grad, Yount played football and baseball at Wake Forest University from 1935-37….started a 15-year playing career by signing with Connie Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics in 1938 and played for the A’s until 1939…made his Major League debut at the age of 21 — the youngest player from Catawba County to make it to baseball’s highest level…Yount went on to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates organization from 1940-41…played for the Triple-A Toronto Maple Leafs in the International League in 1942…served his country during World War III from 1943-45…returned to baseball with the Triple-A Buffalo Bison in 1946-47….served as a player-manager the Newton-Convoer Twins of the Western Carolina League from 1948-52…led the Twins to two first-place finishes in 1949 (72-36 overall) and 1950 (69-41 overall)…Yount’s Twins teams finished no lower than fourth and went to the league finals twice…finished his player career at the age of 35 with 1,369 hits and 132 home runs.
1990 CVCC national championship golf team
The five-person team consisting of Bryan Norris, Jim Murray, Eddie Martin, Mark Clodfelter, Brad Turner and head coach Charlie Bock helped lead Catawba Valley Community College to its first and only national championship in school history at McCormick Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona…all five golfers received All-American status by virtue of their national title win.
